What You Can Do for Common Dental Emergencies

  • Severe Toothache: Rinse your mouth with warm water to clean the area and use dental floss to remove any trapped food. Avoid applying aspirin directly to the gums, as this can cause irritation. Over-the-counter pain relievers may help until you can see us.
  • Broken or Chipped Tooth: Rinse your mouth with warm water and save any broken pieces of the tooth. Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek to reduce swelling. Bring any tooth fragments with you to your appointment.
  • Knocked-Out Tooth: Hold the tooth by the crown (not the root), rinse it gently with water if dirty and try to reinsert it into the socket. If that is not possible, keep the tooth moist by placing it in milk or a saline solution and bring it to our office immediately.
  • Abscess: Rinse your mouth with a mild saltwater solution to help ease the pain and draw the pus to the surface. Avoid popping the abscess, as this can spread the infection. Seek immediate dental care.
  • Soft Tissue Injuries: Rinse your mouth with a saltwater solution, apply a cold compress to reduce swelling and use gauze to control any bleeding. Visit us as soon as possible for further evaluation and treatment.

FAQ

What is considered a dental emergency?

A dental emergency includes situations such as severe tooth pain, a knocked-out tooth, broken or chipped teeth and infections or abscesses. If you are experiencing any of these, seek immediate care.

What should I do if I knock out a tooth?

If a tooth is knocked out, try to place it back into its socket if possible. If not, keep it in a container with milk or saliva, and seek emergency dental care immediately. Time is critical in saving the tooth.

Can I go to the ER for a dental emergency?

You can visit the ER for severe dental issues like uncontrolled bleeding or facial swelling, but it is best to contact our office for most dental emergencies since they can provide specialized care.

Note: For trauma to the head or neck, please visit the emergency room before coming to our dental office.

How can I manage a toothache before seeing a dentist?

You can manage a toothache by rinsing your mouth with warm salt water, taking over-the-counter pain relievers and applying a cold compress to the outside of your face to reduce swelling.

Is emergency dental care more expensive?

Emergency dental care may cost more than a regular appointment, especially if it requires immediate treatment outside of normal office hours. However, many practices offer payment plans to help manage costs.
